How to Apply

The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program invites applications from prospective students who are committed to social work practice that includes services to the poor and oppressed in the urban environment and who will work to alleviate poverty, oppression, and discrimination.

All application materials must be submitted electronically online. The following application task checklist will guide you through the process. In order for an application to be reviewed for admission all the materials, including reference letters, must be received by the deadline: January 15 before 11:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Please Note:
Applications received between September 1 and November 30 will be reviewed as they are received, and decisions made without comparison to other applications.

Applications received between December 1 and January 15 will be reviewed and compared to other applications received during that period.

    Final Deadline: both the UIC Application and the MSW Supplemental Application (including reference letters) must be submitted by January 15, 2019 at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Starting an Application

The UIC Application and the MSW Supplemental Application are housed in a single application for Domestic and International applicants.


  1. Applicants must create an account
  2. Applicants will receive an email with a PIN. Enter the PIN and your Date of Birth on the next page to complete registration.
  3. Click Start New Application, then open application.
  4. The application is dynamic and certain pieces of information are required before additional pages unlock.
  5. Click Here to Apply.

The MSW Supplementary Application includes:

    Please Note: You may enter up to 350 words per question. Please answer all questions.

  • Three Letters of Reference

    Please submit email addresses for your references. The university will automatically contact the references’ email to request an electronic letter of recommendation. All letters of recommendation must be submitted by the recommended deadline: November 30, 2018, before 11:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time or final deadline: January 15, 2019, before 11:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
    Please Note: References should be individuals who are qualified to assess your ability to successfully complete a graduate social work program and/or your ability to be a good social worker, consistent with the mission and values of the Jane Addams College of Social Work. Such individuals include work supervisors, volunteer supervisors and academic advisors.

    1. Recent college graduates should have at least one instructor or someone who can attest to your academic ability and performance.
    2. Individuals applying to the Advanced Standing Program Option should include at least one reference who can comment on your performance in the BSW field experience.
    3. Do not use friends, family members, or persons whose interaction with you is superficial.
  • Academic Transcripts

    Upload and submit electronically the transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate schools attended. UIC undergraduate students will not need to submit credentials for UIC coursework. A UIC transcript will post to the application within a day or two of submission. DO NOT SEND OFFICIAL PAPER TRANSCRIPTS BY MAIL.
    Applicants must request that official, sealed, academic transcripts from each college attended be sent to their home. These transcripts should be opened, scanned and saved to your computer, and then uploaded to your application.
    Individuals who accept an offer of admission to the Jane Addams College of Social Work, and confirm plans to attend the College in the fall will be required to submit to the College a sealed official transcript from the degree issuing undergraduate college or university. This also applies to UIC undergraduate students. Please send the final sealed official transcript with degree posted to:

Applicants who submitted an application for Fall 2018, and submitted three recommendation letters will not have to resubmit emails for references in the application. The reference letters will be included in your Fall 2019 folder; however, applicants must complete the application and submit the application fee.

Deferment Information and Deadlines

On rare occasions the college may defer the admission of a few applicants who have been accepted into the program, and sent their confirmation and deposit. Reasons for deferment may include the illness of the applicant, illness of an applicants’ family member, or for some serious emergency or situation. Deferment may also be possible in situations when the applicant has received an unexpected opportunity to study abroad, or an opportunity to advance their knowledge in the area of concentration before entering the program.
To request deferment, please send a statement indicating why you want to defer. The statement should be sent in a separate email to Please address the statement to Ms. Marybel Flores, Visiting Assistant Dean for Admissions & Financial Aid. A decision will be made, and you will be informed.
