Alumni Awards Criteria & Nomination Process

Jane Addams Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award

Presented to an alumnus who has achieved outstanding success and national/international distinction in their chosen field of social work.

Criteria:

  • Must hold an earned degree (1971 or later) from Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
  • Advances knowledge and enhances the profession of social work by making an exceptional impact on the profession, community, and/or social work education.
  • Demonstrates leadership in the development and/or implementation of policies and/or services on behalf of underserved urban populations.
  • Must be an individual who is highly distinguished for his/her social work profession and life’s work.
  • Must be a person of such stature and demonstrated ability that fellow alumni, students, faculty and staff of the JACSW will take pride in and be inspired by his/her recognition.
  • Must be an individual who, in deed or in action, reflects the critical importance that his/her education at the JACSW had on his/her professional success.
  • Recipient must be able to receive award in person at Alumni Event on April 30, 2020.

Jane Addams Rising Alumni Award

Recognizes an alumnus who, within 10 years of receiving their highest JACSW degree, is doing innovative work in his/her early career, demonstrating influence within his/her field, and making a notable impact on the social work profession.

Criteria:

  • Must have earned his/her highest degree from Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago within the last 10 years.
  • A successful candidate for this award will show a strong commitment to social change; leadership in an agency or community; creativity in non-traditional or innovative approaches to practice; contributions to the field through research and publications and/or demonstrated professional skills.
  • Must be an individual in whom fellow alumni, students, faculty and staff of the college will take pride and be inspired by his/her recognition.
  • Must be an individual who, in deed or in action, reflects the importance of his/her education at JACSW at UIC.
  • Achieved early distinction in his/her social work career, is considered “a rising star” in the social work profession, and has provided volunteer leadership and service to his/her communities.
  • Recipient must be able to receive award in person at Alumni Event on April 30, 2020.

Submission Process for All Awards

  1. A statement describing why the individual believes the nominee is deserving of the award; the statement needs to speak to the specific criteria outlined, and provide examples to make a compelling case. If not self-nominating, include a statement that graduate has agreed to be nominated.
  2. The nominee’s resume/CV to highlight educational background, professional activities, awards, and affiliations.
  3. Contact information including mailing address, phone number(s), email(s) of both the nominee and the nominator.

Optional, but highly encouraged:

  1. Two letters of recommendation.
  2. No more than five other supporting materials such as newspaper/journal articles, reports, etc.

To qualify for the 2022 Alumni & Friends Celebration, nominations for either award must be submitted by Sunday, December 19, 2021.
