Preparation for Licensure
Register for and pass the school social worker content area exam through the Illinois Licensure Testing System.
Complete field placement hours and coursework.
Create an educator licensure information system account (ELIS). ISBE and JACSW will post all related licensure information and documents to this account. You will also use this account to apply for your license.
The college licensure officer will provide you with a blue information form during the fall semester that you will fill out and return to her.
Application for Licensure
Wait for the licensure officer to entitle you and confirm you have met the license requirements (you will receive email confirmation in early June informing you to proceed with the online application process through your ELIS account).
Submit your online application and pay the associated fee.
You will be able to view your license number immediately upon completion of the application process. You will also be given the option to print a final document, providing you have completed the process. This is your proof to use with potential employers.
Once your license has been issued you will need to register it through your ELIS account. The registration period is five years and the fee is $50.
Complete the professional development requirements during the five year period of validity. Every cycle you must renew your license through ELIS. Once your license is renewed you must also register it for another five year period by submitting the applicable fee via ELIS.
If you experience difficulty navigating ELIS please call ISBE at 217-557-6763. Potential employers can also verify your license history and pending licenses through the public search portal.
Download this brief PowerPoint presentation that describes the “entitlement” process and provides information to assist you to prepare and apply for your Professional Educator License (PEL), School Social Worker.
